Herbal Tea Safety
Herbal tea is a wonderful and approachable way to incorporate herbs into everyday life. But just because something is natural doesn't mean every herb is right for every BODY.
I study herbs, grow them and work with them quite a bit. But I am not a clinical herbalist or healthcare provider. I encourage you to be your own advocate, learn about the herbs you're using and ask your healthcare provider when you're unsure.
Medications & Supplements
Herbs can interact with prescription medications, over-the-counter medications and supplements. Every BWG blend has a complete ingredient list so you know exactly what you're drinking.
If you take medications, especially blood thinners or blood sugar/diabetes medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist about possible interactions.
Pregnancy, Breastfeeding & Children
There simply isn't enough research on many herbs in pregnant women and children to say for certain what's appropriate, and there is also a lot of conflicting information.
Because of that, I recommend checking with your healthcare provider or doula before using herbal teas during pregnancy or breastfeeding or giving them to children.
Medical Conditions, Allergies & Sensitivities
Herbs are plants, and plant allergies can carry over to herbal teas. Chamomile, for example, is part of the Asteraceae family and may cause a reaction in people who are sensitive to ragweed or related plants.
Certain herbs may also not be appropriate with particular health conditions. Read the ingredient list and check with your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
And remember, every BODY is different — an herb that works beautifully for one person may not be the right fit for another.
The Bottom Line
I want you to enjoy herbal tea AND feel comfortable with what you're putting into your body. Be your own advocate, learn about the herbs you're using and know what's in your cup.
And when you have questions about how an herb may interact with your medications or your individual health situation, that's the time to reach out to your doctor, pharmacist, doula or other trusted healthcare provider. 💚
